A driver is a segment of computer code that controls a device, and, as the name implies, drives the device. To be used by a computer, most devices, such as a printer, a mouse, a monitor, a graphics card, a video card, a hard disk or a CD/DVD drive, requires its own driver. Generally, a driver controls only the device for which it was made. An Agere modem driver, for instance, cannot be substituted for a Lucent driver, a Win driver, or a Toshiba driver. Although each of these modems perform the same function, communication between systems over a line, each has been designed differently by its manufacturer and so requires their own specialized driver.

A driver must also be written to work under a given operating system. An Agere, Lucent, or a Win Modem driver, written for a Windows operating system, will not work on a Linux operating system, just as a driver written to work with a Linux operating system will not work in a Windows system. Windows or Linux operating systems provide a standard interface between the operating system and any drivers it may use. A modem interface, for a Windows or Linux system will contain abstract methods for operating a modem, such as methods to read or write to the modem, but it will be the modem driver that contains the actual instructions to which the modem responds. Thus, if a Windows operating system issues a read command to an Agere, Lucent Win or a Toshiba modem driver, each driver will fill out the read command with its own instructions for reading the modem. This design allows manufacturers of modems to exploit their hardware designs, and frees the operating system manufacturer from having to accommodate all of the possible modem drivers.

Most PC users learn of drivers when they install a new device onto their system. A CD probably came with the modem, with instructions to run a setup program on it for the device installed. It’s smart to treat these CD’s as essential driver backups, especially if the device is a modem. Most manufacturers provide their drivers on the Internet as free downloads, but if your Agere, Lucent, Win or Toshiba modem driver has been destroyed or corrupted so that you cannot make a connection on the Internet, you will not be able to download it from the net. In this case, consider using another computer to download the required driver instead.

Know what drivers your machine is using and back these up. Several free programs that are able to detect the drivers your machine uses can be downloaded from the Internet. The best of these are those that provide a backup function, which will store your drivers into installable packages. Write these packages to a removable storage device, such as a CD. Then, if your system crashes – as they all seem to do – you won’t have to waste time figuring out what devices you have and what drivers go with them. Then, if your modem driver gets corrupted, along with any other drivers your system uses, you can just re-install the modem driver and make a connection over the Internet to download those drivers you didn’t backup.

Once you’ve been through the drill of losing modem drivers, you’ll be a devotee of the backup. Trust me.

As a relationship therapist, I feel like I run into more than my fair share of people who sort of miss the point of things. Sometimes, they go out and get extravagant presents for their loved ones instead of apologizing and learning how not to fight anymore, for example. Other times, they think that it is okay to cheat as long as they do not enjoy it too much, or as long as the other person does not find out. But the worst problems, at least from a professional standpoint, are the patients who are completely incapable of comprehending a rejection.

Sometimes it is just too early in the relationship, but they are unwilling to give it time. My son has been into plastic model kits for the last couple of years. Honestly, I do not know where he gets it. I have barely put together a plastic model kit or two in my entire life. I certainly never liked the plastic airplane model kits that he likes. The only model that I ever liked, in fact, was one of the first space shuttle that successfully launched into orbit. Everyone was excited about the space program in those days, you see, so putting together a model spaceship was almost a requirement of every red-blooded American child.

At first, I did not support his obsession with plastic model kits. You see, I am a pretty practical person. I believe in putting work into your hobbies, and I believe that it is important to have hobbies, but I believe that they should be things that actually give you some tangible benefit. I just can’t see the benefit of putting together a 1 48 model NASCAR car.

Still, his passion for plastic model kits is really contagious. I have begun to become a fan myself. I especially like the more fantastic ones. He has Gundam plastic model kits are awesome. They are basically giant robots from a Japanese animated cartoon. When I look at them, I think about what a thrill that cartoon would have been for me as a boy. There wasn’t anything like it around when I was growing up, but if there had been, I would have watched it. After all, who doesn’t like seeing giant robots battling over the fate of the entire world?

His love of plastic model kits also makes his birthdays pretty easy. I always know where to go to get him his birthday presents, and I always know what to get. He drops hints like crazy, but still manages to seem just a bit surprised when I get him exactly what he wanted on his special day. He may be a weird one, but I sure have raised a polite and gracious child.

Recently, he has begun to get into plastic model ship kits. I am quite proud of him. You see, building a plastic model ship is really difficult. It is much harder than those snap-together plastic model kits that he started with. You have to get the sails, the masts, the rigging, and the hull of the boat to all fit perfectly together. It is no easy task!

They’re creepy. They’re disease ridden. They even turn into vampires. Well, maybe only in the movies. Still, bats can be a huge problem in any household. Most bat infestations occur in the months of June and July, and may be difficult to resolve. The interesting thing about bats is that most species are harmless to humans, and some people even find them cute (up close). However, an attic full of bats presents the problem of massive amounts of guano (dung) that is filled with ammonia strong enough to kill, in some cases. In addition, some bats are known to be carriers of rabies. You’ll want to protect yourself and your family from these little pests. You need to try some bat repellant methods.

There is really no such thing as “bat repellant”. These little animals are quite durable, and seem to be resistant to any conventional repellants. There is one chemical so-called “bat repellant” on the market, but it is also harmful to kids and pets. It’s a moist crystal you sprinkle on the attic floors. This chemical bat repellant does very little to rid you of these bat tenants, drys up, and then spreads through the air to the human tenants!

If you want a better bat repellant method, consider using noise. Bats are famous for their ultra sonic sensitive ears. So any abrasive, loud sound, played continuously, will eventually drive them out. If you have a boom box, put it in the attic, slide in a heavy-metal album and turn up the volume. The uninvited, disease-ridden critters may be gone before the batteries run out!

Some people have had success catching bats with a glue board. You may find these at janitorial stores, or hardware department stores. Place these at the entrances and exits of the bats’ dwelling quarters, and change it daily. If you have a severe infestation, this may not be the most efficient of bat repellant methods.

If all else has failed, try installing floodlights in the attic. If the bats are not hibernating, they should be frightened enough to evacuate their homes. If they do happen to be in their hibernation stage, light will kill them. It’s generally a bad idea to kill bats, because you’ll need to come in close contact to remove them. Not only that, but if an unknown bat is left on the attic floor, it will rot, and a stinky dead bat can leave you and your family open to disease.

If you’ve been invaded by the nefarious little creatures known as bats, don’t lose hope! Loud sounds, glue boards, and the bat nemesis of the famously feared light is sure to drive out the critters, leaving you and your family to enjoy the summer season.

For high school athlete Mark Ericson, his running season went great up until spring this year. His training for the past year was relentless and it seemed like it was paying off. Each day that he ran, he was shaving a hundredth of a second off his time. But not long after, at the beginning of spring track, everything seemed to go off-track. Each time he ran the thousand-meter course, he seemed to add about 5 seconds to his time. He seemed to be getting slower with each training round. His coach began to look deeper into the problem; the boy didn’t need any running tips – he was an expert himself. And yet, here he was getting slower by the day, irritable, his muscles numb all the time. His coach had read about something like this – it was called overtraining. It is the thing that every athlete dreads. Is there are a limit to how much you can train your body – is there a limit to how much you can push yourself?

Overtraining is something you’ll rarely read about in any list of running tips you come by. If it is rare, it is only because the kind of commitment it takes to reach a state of overtraining is something most people find to be too much. It is actually a real physical ailment. If you overstress your body for too long, it fights back. It fights back with aches and pains, tiredness and psychological detachment. As rare as the condition is, people are beginning to take notice of this, and it’s becoming somewhat a fashionable ailment to suffer from. These days, people read about overtraining in a section on running tips in the magazine, and the moment they have a problem with their performance, they begin to complain of overtraining.

This isn’t the way it’s supposed to go. To begin with, overtraining is terribly rare – even for athletes. If you are running maybe 25 miles a week and you feel that you have a problem, you probably need to look into other causes. The body is perfectly capable of handling 25 miles a week. When you try to double that or maybe triple that, and then feel dead inside doing 80 miles a week, that’s when you might need to consider the possibility that you could be overtraining.

There is an important reason why you can’t just go about jumping to the conclusion every so often that you could have a case of overtraining on your hands. When you are in this position, there is really no way out of it other than to quit training for months. What athlete would want to do that – it would probably take him out of running forever. So how really do you know that yours is a case of genuine overtraining? As a matter of fact, overtraining is a poorly understood condition. It isn’t just a slowness or sense of exhaustion that signals this. The first thing you notice is that your heart rate is a lot faster than it should be when you’re resting normally, or with moderate levels of work. And athletes also find that they feel weaker, and they can’t really walk with the kind of muscle-coordinated confidence they always had. The best running tips always suggest that you need to push yourself as an athlete as far as your body will go – without going too far. It’s when an athlete goes over the line without realizing it, that this happens. You’re supposed to train just a bit past your real abilities to qualify as having pushed yourself. When you train more than just a touch above your ability though, your body throws in the towel.

Olympic coaches are exquisitely aware of overtraining and know exactly how to hit the mark. Not long ago, the best of athletic wisdom out there felt that it was the sheer hours of training you put into your sport that helped you improve. Now coaches understand that there is a point beyond which a lot of training doesn’t really help you that much, and only puts you in danger of overtraining. When it occurs, the signs are there for all to see – when an athlete seems to gain very little for crazy hours of training he puts in, that’s a sign. An athlete who isn’t pumping his fist and beaming with self-confidence after a training session is another sign. If an athlete is just exhausted all the time, it’s time to stop. It’s just that athletes completely give themselves over to the sport and never know when to stop.

Sports medicine specialists would be a great idea when you suspect a problem. Sometimes they’ll give you blood tests to test for certain kinds of chemicals known as Ferritins that appear at very low levels in people who overtrain. With the right kind of supplements, it could help cure the problem. But mostly, the advice will be simple and unpleasant – it’s three months off the sport. It will be for the athlete’s own good, and it always works.

With banking facilities moving out of the branch, and into homes and computers as a matter of convenience, it’s only a matter of time before the whole banking experience goes right in your pocket. In fact, the time is right now; Wells Fargo has just announced the launch of a text message banking service that’ll be open to all its customers, whether or not they subscribe to an Internet banking facility with that bank. And they get major bragging rights with this launch too – Wells Fargo is close to being the first bank in the country to offer cellphone banking. Wells Fargo feels that retail banking customers really need to be able to check how much money they have, with the least fuss possible. But there are lots of other scraps of essential information you get through text message mobile banking – you could get the location of an ATM nearby messaging ATM and your zip code, and so on.

The banks don’t really charge anything for such a service, but it also depends on your phone carrier. They’ll charge you for the text message of course, and also, services such as these tend to not work with all cell phone services. Lots of people these days don’t actually have messaging enabled on their plans, and they will usually run up against a little bit of disappointment when they realize that this new service is going to take a little time to arrange for.

Mobile banking right now is kind of where credit cards were 50 years ago; people aren’t really sure they want this new service. And so, to promote a little trust and to win a little customer enthusiasm, they are giving you the kind of ironclad guarantee you get with credit cards. If there is any fraud that takes place that drains any money out of your account, the bank will put it all back for you, just as long as you don’t take longer than 60 days to report the problem after they send you an account statement.

It’s just as well that they are putting up this guarantee – there is a wave of all-new phishing scams expected to hit mobile banking – and expected to be much worse than it ever was on computers. People are just downloading apps left and right on their cell phones without a thought and it won’t be long before someone invents a piece of malware app. Would you believe that Google actually identified 50 apps on its Android market that were malicious? And there aren’t even that many Android-enabled phones in use now. If this is the kind of rousing enthusiasm you see in the malware community for mobile banking now before anything has even started, things should get really interesting in a couple of years when everyone’s shooting off mobile banking text messages all the time.

Today, there are many sources for free money, more typically called grants, and the key to getting a grant is writing a grant proposal. You can hire a professional, but if you’re like most small businesses, you just don’t have the money for one. That’s why you need the grant, to get money to afford such professionals. Fortunately, a grant proposal does not have to be written by a professional grant writer. If you paid attention to your English composition instructor in high school or your freshman year of college, and you’ve mastered that level, you’re already equipped to write a proposal yourself. You just need to follow the rules of good composition and you’re sure to succeed.

You’ll succeed in getting free money from the government as a grant if your proposal satisfies the government’s requirements for anyone who would receive a grant. This means that your proposal will meet the government’s own goals: education of the people, the promotion of small businesses, the furtherance of political integration to name a few. That’s why your grant proposal states in both the “Executive Summary,” the first section of your proposal, and the “Statement of Need” section the existence of a need that has a lot of room for satisfying solutions, one of which will be the project you’re proposing. In the “Executive Summary” portion you briefly state the social, political, or educational need that the government has already emphasized, and the particular need that give rise to your project, to the solution to that need that you’re proposing. This should be a genuine need, one that is real, that is called for, that is a demand. You are not creating a need, like a salesman who creates a need that really isn’t there. You will have carefully analyzed this need — how else can you develop a solution, your project — and will fully disclose the specifics of that need in the “Needs” section of your proposal. By the time the reader finished reading that section, he will want a solution himself. Good salesmanship requires you to arouse a need, and in these two sections you will have your opportunity. Don’t waste it.

Having explicated the need, you’ll then indicate in the grant proposal “Executive Summary” a very brief description of your solution and, following the “Needs section,” a detailed presentation of your project. In the project description section you’re going to present a description of the project, each point answering to the needs you have already aroused. You’ll show how your project will result in a total solution (though perhaps not exhaustive) to the need. Remember, your project is a solution, not a dream. It must be possible.

Then, briefly in the grant proposal summary and with details in the section, “Budget,” you’ll very specifically assign a dollar amount you require to pay for each requirement of the project. This will include facilities, personnel, professional costs, and any other cost that must be borne. Here, you’re telling them exactly how you intend to spend the money they grant. You want to be specific and you want to be exhaustive. You’re not going to have a chance to ask them again with another grant proposal. This is it.

You’ll have one last chance, both in the summary and in the section, “Organization,” to tell the reader why you or your organization can make this project happen. Here, qualifications and experience apply. Tell them only what is relevant and why you or your organization can be trusted to see the project through. Don’t brag, be true.

Your proposal will conclude with a conclusion section. You’ve argued your case, now you summarize again, this time with the reader fully informed. Get you major points out there once again and conclude with confidence.

In addition to these sections, you are expected to layout the means by which you will be evaluating your progress. Here, you schedule out milestones. A grant proposal is an exercise in composition. Stick to the principles of good composition and you’ll succeed in getting the grant that will start you or your company on the road of success.
